you know, amidst all the hype, about the tremendous BOMB blast, at a prominent VC's residence recently,( which turned out, not to be a bomb, after all), one detail in the world around us, got unnoticed.
save for the dedicated brethren, who still uphold, the centuries hallowed tradition, of bunking college and dredging their way, to the cinema, closest to their coll, none else, have bothered to note, the alarming rise, in ticket costs, all around chennai.
before you brush it off, as a one off thing, only at satyam, let me assure you, that even at the best theaters, like udayam, and Kasi, one can now purchase, what was once, a Princely,40 bucks, wow you must be rich, box seat, for a now, you definitely need a credit card, 70 BUCKS!!! and at satyam, it's fairly simple. you just pay twice as much as you used to, to come out and crib about the movie later on.
and on a side note, for the last 2 days, there is no ZEE sports on air, even as i speak.. just as teh tri series is going on..
something smells fishy here you know.. and it's not just karawadu

The ambience in Udayam is much better than that in Kasi.
Being poor and miserly and all, it's a pirate's life for me.
Off-topic, that's a total of 28 commas in that post. Lynn Truss will be proud.
Why is that I never understand what Krithiga says..
U knw other Metros r worse.. Delhi Mumbai and bangalore the rates start at 150 and go upto 500..
Blame it on Urban explosion, IT industry and CD Piracy..
@ sheks: you seriously think so? what are we comparing? darkness of the kettle, or the pot? lol
@ arun: i know exactly how u feel da.. me feels the same.. somehow, not convinced, that driving prices thru the roof, will convince people to boycott piracy
@krithiga: can u blame me, if i eat, shoot and leave? point taken mam.. although, i wonder, what kind of ppl, sit and count commas in a para.. period(pun definitely intended)
I thought u were trying to draw a comparison between Udayam and Kasi.
Adding to Arun's comment:You must be aware that there's a mall-cum-multiplex,PVR, coming up at Aminjikarai. The tickets here are expected to be priced at minimum 150 bucks.Blame this on rising land prices.
Archith- i think the reason why the small theatres have increased their prices is because of the movies that they are showing. As in some movies have high distribution rates. A case in point is Lage Raho Munnabhai- 125 bucks at Satyam, 70 bucks at Anna. The better the movie the higher the ticket will cost. As far as multiplex are concerned i guess its the ambience and the butter they put on the popcorn that explains the price.
And whats with Kritiga going around claiming to be poor. She is the only person on the comment list for this post who ears a monthly salary - rumours are that it comes to a pricely sum of 10,000 Rs. Pirate my ass.
typo in previous comment-who earns a monthly salary. dont want Kritiga bringing up Wren and Martin up next now, do we ?
"rumours are that it comes to a pricely sum of 10,000 Rs."
And they remain rumours. I don't earn a 5 figure salary yet.
Psst, blogs are not meant for bullying poor and innocent bystanders. *ahem*
There are actually several Multiplexes coming up. Sathyam's planning 12 more screens in 3 multiplexes in Kilpauk, Poonamalle High Rd and Vadapalani, three malls cum multiplexes in Old Mahabalipuram Road (hear say), INOX theatres, and as Sheks points our PVR is nearing completion.
Chennai is getting multiplexed. That will mean the end of Sathyam monopoly, but I don't think the prices will fall, given the exorbitant pricing of PVR etc.
The era of pirated VCDs gonna make a comeback.
